The Technical Code Test
Love them, or hate them, if you're applying for a job as a software engineer you'd better learn to embrace them because they're ingrained into every interview process.
Interesting observation because, usually the conversation will start something along the lines of
"We really like your profile, love that you've career changed into tech. We know we have a *diversity/culture (delete as applicable) problem and we need to bring more people on board like you to help us fix it."
"Ah, is that so? " I'll say. Knowing full well this isn't going to end well. So let's take a look at how I'm going to be brought into the company.
"The interview process will involve a pairing session with one/two of our engineers working on a technical challenge"
which translates to live code test under observation.
I ask, bearing in mind that the conversation started around my 'diverse' profile,
"Can I have a choice of interview? I perform better if I can complete a take home test rather than a live coding challenge."
The answer is usually no. The reason given is that people spend too long to complete a take home test often spending 8 - 9 hours, even if the instructions are to spend no more than let's say 2 hours. Whereas the live coding session is only 1 hour. "Much better use of your time".
"Ah ok" I say. Knowing full well that this presented version of reality couldn't be further away from the truth. You see, I carried out research to see how other people prepare for these tests which if I am completely honest put the fear of god in me. I am a rabbit frozen in car headlights. I might as well have a doughnut for a brain.
People that have to prepare for a job at one of the big name companies will spend hours and hours, month after month, cramming and practicing into the early hours. This is on top of a day job. Just to pass that technical test. A test that can often cover topics that you don't actually use day to day. So this becomes revision for an exam. Learning techniques on how to pass this exam. And not only that, you have to do it within a certain time limit. A very short time limit. I've worked out that if I wanted to commit these kind of tasks to memory I'd need to prepare for at least 6 months. Trying to fit this around other commitments of my day job, my family and helping to run a busy household. That's not one hour now, is it?
I have never successfully completed this type of challenge.
"The pairing session is going to be much more relaxed with a simple list of tasks. We're not trying to trick you, we just want to get a feel for how you communicate. To see what your thought processes are."
That does sound better. But I'm not going to lie, I will still get total brain freeze. I just don't perform well under those conditions.
I have been successful only once with this type of challenge.
"The technical stage is a take home test."
Now this I don't mind so much. If I want to spend longer on it that's my choice. I usually do take longer, but only because I want to make sure I'm giving it my best shot. I remember one interview process where apparently I "smashed the take home challenge". Nice. They then tagged on an unexpected paring session as part of the final stage. Of course, I failed.
The one time this did go well for me was when the test was used as content for the next stage. Digging into the whys behind the technical choices and what else I might have achieved with more time. It gave me a chance to get a feel for what day to day might look like at this particular company. Did I feel comfortable with how I was challenged? Was I able to challenge back? Was the conversation constructive?
The other interviews? Well, as a junior most of the time I didn't get a response which I guess means that the submission wasn't what they were looking for. But feedback is rare so I can only guess.
To the few who did take the time to offer feedback, thank you. Each of you helped me to keep the rejection in perspective and work on making the next submission stronger.
"There is no technical test"
Did I just hear that correctly? Yes I did. This isn't a new contender on the block, in fact 50% of the jobs where I've been successful at interview were this format. Some companies are starting to listen. Even experienced senior developers can fail live code tests. It can cause the candidate undue stress and anxiety. The issue over how much time each person spends on a take home challenge varies. Is someone who is time short, whether that's because of family or day job commitments, disadvantaged against someone who has no other ties?
So look, what if there is no technical test? If you're a junior, have you already got side projects that can be shared and discussed, perhaps on a github account? What if the experience listed on your CV is enough, you're already employed as a developer, right? How about if the interview process is conversational. Not one piece of code in sight. Let's discuss some of the challenges you've had. Or talk about your proudest achievements. Talk me through your CV.
This is what two recent interviews looked like. And they happened when I wasn't looking for another job. I had no time to prepare and get myself in interview mode. And guess what?
I got offers. From both of them.
Give a choice
We are all different. Isn't that the fundamental basis of diversity?

One speaker spoke of their interview process which gives candidates choice. Choice? Wow, that made me smile. A lot. Why is it that companies can't offer choice? If you are serious about diversity and inclusion, and this isn't just a token catch phrase spewed out at interview, then give choice.
I told that speaker how happy I was to hear him mention choice. His response?
" It takes so little work to be kind, honestly. I can't fathom why folks would waste time trying to have someone be stressed and have a bad experience. Not gonna get the best, and it's so easy to just ask and get the exact same output / clarity."
